"To Helga And Back" is a Season 2 episode of Johnny Bravo.

Synopsis[]

Johnny calls for a mail order perfect woman, but receives a woman named Helga instead.

Summary[]

After his mom leaves for a boxing class, Johnny makes up a bowl of Frosted Sugar Bits for breakfast -- the box he pours contains a "free gift," which turns out to be a VHS-tape. Johnny heads to the living room so he can watch the tape while eating his cereal -- the VHS-tape shows an ad for "Around the World with 80 Babes" (basically a mail-order bride service), which promises that a woman from another country will arrive and "lower her standards just for him." An excited Johnny calls the number (1-800-LADY) and is told that he'll have to wait at least six days for his companion to arrive. Johnny decides to play with a kendama toy to pass the time.

A deliveryman with a giant pink gift box soon arrives at Johnny's house -- after bringing the box inside, Johnny opens it and is greated by a large redheaded woman with a vaguely European accent. Introducing herself as Helga, she gives the meathead a big bear hug and exclaims about how excited she is about being his girlfriend -- Johnny's confused and is repulsed by Helga's size and strength. Just as Helga is going to kiss Johnny, his nerdy friend Carl arrives with a pair of steel cage wrestling and is immediately taken with Helga -- Johnny pulls Carl aside and asks him for help on how to get rid of Helga. Carl suggests that Johnny do what he normally does to drive away women (i.e., take Helga out on a terrible date). Johnny takes the tickets from Carl and tells Helga that he's going to take her out on their first date, which she's excited about.

Later, at the wrestling arena, the referee announces that the audience participation match is about to start. He needs a pair of audience members to fight the tag team champions, the Surly Accountant and the Substitute Teacher. Rather be mad at Johnny, Helga loves this part of their date and even drags Johnny down to the ring so they can take on the wrestlers and win the prize -- during the match, Helga uses Johnny as a weapon, pummeling the wrestlers. Johnny and Helga ultimately win the match, with Helga assuring Johnny that she had fun and asks where they're going next. Johnny then takes Helga to Pops's diner -- much to Johnny's surprise, Helga loves the food at the diner, likening it to the food she'd get back in her home country.

Pops comes by to bring them more food -- he also gives them a bottle of clam juice, pointing out that Carl paid for it (he waves flirtatiously in Helga's direction). Johnny then angrily confronts Carl, questioning why the nerd is trying to steal his date. When Carl claims that he thought Johnny didn't like Helga, Johnny admits that he wasn't interested in Helga at first, but he's realizing that, despite her appearance, he's starting to genuinely fall for her. He then decides to give her the "Johnny Bravo charm."

He walks back over to Helga, and starts flexing and spouting pick-up lines at her. Helga is confused, saying he is talking crazy. Johnny continues, saying that he hopes the kids take after him. He tries to kiss her, but Helga hits him on the head, calling him a "pig." She says she regrets liking Johnny in the first place. Then, she leaves the diner with Carl, who looks absolutely ecstatic. Johnny is heartbroken at losing his foreign girlfriend, but quickly gets over it when he sees the plate of raccoon nuggets and starts eating them.

Trivia[]

  • While being wrestled in the Latin Spanish dub, Johnny makes a "fourth wall breaking" plea, roughly translating to "Not in the mouth that I do dubbing!"
  • The delivery man in the episode is a caricature of character designer Dexter Smith. He designed himself and Helga, who he delivers to Johnny. His character was voiced by Tom Kenny.
  • Helga's referred to as being Swedish in guides/descriptions for the episode, but in the actual episode, she describes herself as a "woman of indeterminate country." This is similar to Rolf from Ed, Edd 'n' Eddy -- although some episodes indicate that Rolf's from somewhere in Europe, possibly Scandinavia (an episode from the final season implies that Rolf and his family are from Norway).

Episode Connections[]

  • Steele Cage Wrestling makes a return in "Jurassic Dork", in which Bunny watches a match on TV.
