"The Unsinkable Johnny Bravo" is a Season 2 episode of Johnny Bravo.
Synopsis[]
On board the lake-tour liner, the S.S. Moronic, Johnny sparks the romantic interest of a rich first class woman named Sheila.
Plot Summary[]
Sometime in the future, a middle-aged Little Suzy visits an elderly Johnny at his home. She shows him a photo of the underwater S.S. Moronic, which was discovered by her real estate conglomerate. Then, Suzy reveals to him a ring they found in the wreckage. Johnny recognizes it as his Squint Ringo decoder ring, which causes him to reminisce about the woman he gave it to.
In a flashback to the present, Johnny and his mother Bunny are about to board the S.S. Moronic with cheap third class tickets for the three-hour bay tour. Johnny is disinterested in the tour, until he spots a rich blonde woman. Bored on the ship, Johnny accidentally gets hooked and lifted up to the first class area, where he meets the woman, Sheila. Johnny's awkward, odd first impression catches her eye, making him stand out from the men around her. Sheila makes the sudden decision to drop her uptight upbringing and date Johnny, which he accepts. The two spend time together, leading up to Johnny letting her borrow his decoder ring. She takes it, and brings him to the ship's helm so they can be alone. Meanwhile, Bunny and the captain are revealed to be on a romantic date of their own.
Johnny, seeming put off by Sheila's romantic intent, decides to take the helm and play around with it, reassuring her he won't crash into anything. Seconds later, a tin can floats by, causing the S.S. Moronic to hit it and begin sinking instantly. Sheila tells Johnny they can make it out of the ship together, but he ignores her in an attempt to save himself. After two lifeboats are filled, Johnny boards Bunny's and they are safely dropped into the lake. Realizing he never asked for his ring back, he swims over to Sheila's lifeboat to get it. She is alone and now disinterested in Johnny, claiming he gave her the ring. He disagrees and she angrily throws the ring into the water, which is then lost and mourned by Johnny. Bunny cuts his dramatic reaction short, telling him there are free doughnuts for them on shore, which is incredibly close by.
Back in the future, Johnny says he never saw Sheila again. Suzy then claims she has a surprise for him, revealing a now elderly Sheila, who apologizes for the way she treated him. Johnny makes his usual attempt at flirting, resulting in her punching him and calling him a pig. Taking the ring back from Johnny, Sheila heads into the bathroom and flushes it down the toilet. Johnny then tries to get at it, pulling out random animals such as a cat, a lobster, and a monkey as the episode ends.
Trivia[]
- This episode heavily parodies the film Titanic, which had been released on December 19th of 1997 (a little less than two years before this episode came out).
- This is one of few episodes to include its own distinct future timeline, two others being "Brave New Johnny" and "Frankenbravo".
- Ironically, the future depicted here seems closer to the one Johnny was expecting in the former episode (similar to The Jetsons), although it takes place within the 21st century.
- Johnny lives alone in Bunny's house, which he has since neglected, as evidenced by cobwebs and an otherwise dirty house. A crooked portrait of Bunny can still be seen hanging on the bathroom wall.
- Suzy's adult self was voiced by Mae Whitman's mother, Pat Musick.
- Suzy says she was Johnny's neighbor for 18 years, implying that she likely moved away for college and had not spoken to Johnny since.
- A photograph in the album, labelled 'On Her Trike', shows what appears to be Suzy's daughter wearing her childhood outfit and riding an oversized tricycle.
- The Duchess of Wiggystick's character model is reused for a woman holding a pig in line to board the S.S Moronic. The design (especially the outfit) is heavily altered, with the oddest change being that she now has lips on the side of her face, making her original (closed) mouth resemble a chin.
Cultural References[]
- The name of the ship, SS Moronic, could be a satiric spin on the SS Naronic, a ship that sunk nineteen years before the Titanic in the same region.
- Bunny and the captain are seen eating a link of sausages together while an Italian man plays an accordion, parodying the famous spaghetti scene from the Disney film Lady and the Tramp.
