Oh Great Athena, we give you this virgin as a sacrifice... to your beauty and womanhood! And I ask that you bless our plentiful land with great fortune and mirth! We offer this heathen in your name! [catastrophic eruption ensues]

—Melissa

Melissa is the leader of the Amazon Women who made her only appearance in "Johnny Bravo and the Amazon Women".

Biography[]

She is the leader of the Amazons, a race of 10-12 foot tall warrior women who live isolated on an island and keep Elephants employed as guards and keep gorillas for pets. They live in a village called the "Village of Beautiful Women" which men are forbidden to see. Despite being the leader of the Amazons, she was first seen collecting coconuts in a wheelbarrow, suggesting she has multiple roles. As leader, it is also her duty to sacrifice virgin men to her peoples' goddess Athena by casting them into a volcano (though only if the man is a virgin or else the man will be rejected and an eruption will occur).

Johnny first encounters Melissa after he crash lands on the amazons island, he hears her singing while collecting coconuts but doesn't realize her size until he gets close to her and flirts with her. Melissa tries to ignore Johnny but his persistence continues to annoy her. She attempts to threaten him into leaving but when Johnny doesn't catch her cue she calls her Elephant guard Christopher to keep him away from the village while she leaves. She is later annoyed to find that Johnny has found the village and she and the other amazons capture him to be sacrificed in a volcano, assuming he is a virgin. However when Johnny is thrown in he is blasted to the island of beautiful men while the Amazons flee. The fate of Melissa and the rest of the Amazons is unknown.

Trivia[]

  • The island of beautiful men seems to be close to the amazons island, it is unknown if they have a connection to one another or if they are aware of the others existence. If they are aware of one another it is possible that they have a similar relationship to the Amazons and the Gargareans in Greek mythology.
    • In Greek mythology, the amazon women lived close to an all-male tribe called Gargareans, the two groups occasionally met with each other to keep both tribes alive with boy children being sent to their fathers and girl children being raised as amazons.
  • The amazons attempted to sacrifice Johnny to Athena, she Olympian goddess of wisdom. The sacrifice being rejected because Johnny is a virgin is a possible reference to Athena being a virgin goddess. However Athena has no connection to volcano's, instead that being associated with Hephaestus.
