"The Hansel & Gretel Project" is a Season 3 episode of Johnny Bravo.

Synopsis[]

Suzy and Carl convince Johnny to help them make a documentary about the Hansel & Gretel witch who lives at the edge of town.

Plot Summary[]

The episode begins on Tuesday, June 4th, at 9:57 AM. Suzy walks up to Johnny's house, wearing a headset and holding a microphone. Johnny opens the door, only to panic once he notices her and Carl pointing a camera at him.

After a chase throughout the house, Suzy follows Johnny to his backyard and restrains him. Johnny struggles, assuming the two are arresting him for stealing cable. Confused, Suzy asks if he would help her and Carl make a documentary on the Hansel & Gretel witch, who supposedly lives at the edge of town. Johnny is reluctant at first, but agrees to help after learning the witch's house is made of candy.

Johnny & Carl Filming (TH&GP)

Walking out in the woods, Suzy leaves a trail of gravel instead of breadcrumbs to avoid getting lost. Seconds later, Johnny is caught eating the rocks off the ground. After getting scolded for this by both of his friends, Johnny remains confident in his own "path-finding abilities." The camera then cuts to a disheveled Suzy, who says they have been lost for five days with little food or water. Johnny briefly plays around with the camera, much to the anger of Suzy.

As night falls, the three sit in a tent picking straws to see who will go out alone to search for the witch. Carl picks the shortest straw and leaves. In the morning, Johnny begins recording, saying there is no sign of him. Outside, Suzy urges Johnny to look at her discovery: The witch's cottage. Immediately, Johnny spots a gingerbread man in Carl's likeness. Assuming his friend was baked into a cookie, Johnny dramatically eats it piece by piece. Alive and well, Carl greets Johnny and claims they were all wrong about the witch. The witch, a normal-looking nice old lady, introduces herself.

Suzy Johnny & Carl In Witch's House

In the cottage, the witch treats the trio to cakes and other pastries. After Johnny urges her to bring more food, she leaves the room. Carl, finding a scrapbook of her favorite recipes, begins to read one for German Chocolate Cake. Learning a key ingredient is Germans, he drops the book in horror and Suzy plans to tell the authorities with him, leaving Johnny behind.

The witch brings back her famous "Blackout Cake" for her hungry guests, which she uses to knock Johnny out cold. Johnny wakes up earlier than expected, tied up and being carried to her oven. The witch then tells him of her plan to bake him into a oatmeal cookie. Suddenly, the front door is kicked down, revealing Carl and Suzy with a health inspector. The inspector arrests the witch for "baking a guy without a license," while Suzy and Carl free their friend. Realizing the house is now unguarded, Johnny begins to eat the candy furniture. Unable to be stopped, he eats the entire camera, ending and destroying their documentary.

Trivia[]

  • This episode parodies both Hansel and Gretel (an old fairytale) and The Blair Witch Project (a supernatural horror film released in 1999).
  • Judging by the date on Suzy's psychology degree in "Freudian Dip", it's likely the events of this episode took place in June of 2000.
  • Johnny assumed Suzy and Carl were trying to arrest him for stealing cable, blaming it on the neighbor's dog.
  • Johnny claims to have "delicate knees" and missing ribs.
  • This marks one of the few times Johnny refers to Suzy by name, implying he is able to remember it.
  • The Witch has a re-used elderly woman character model, which appears throughout the second and third seasons.
