Welcome to Pops'!

—Pops, greeting customers

Pops is the owner of Pop's Moon Palace, a local diner that is frequented by Johnny Bravo and Carl Chryniszzswics.

Like Carl, Pops was introduced in Season 2 after the show's initial retooling and remained even after the retool of Season 4, although he was relegated to one brief cameo role.

Appearance[]

Pops wears a blizzard blue shirt, black pants, black shoes, blue bowtie with red polka dots, and a white apron that has a stain on the bottom left. He has gray hair that was previously blonde.

In Season 4, he wears a green shirt, gray pants, brown shoes, a red bowtie, and a white apron that no longer has a stain.

Personality[]

He is typically friendly, yet greedy and other times blunt or rude, and has some fatherly characteristics. He often gives tips and advice to Johnny; however, his help often turns out to be useless, sometimes provoking trouble for Johnny.

Because of his greed and willingness to serve weird and disgusting food to his customers, his diner's chili is made from rather suspicious ingredients like hair gel and he serves dishes made from many animals, such as possums, pandas, cougars, seals, horses, squid, bald eagles, and raccoons. Pops has a disregard for the law in most cases, as he often acquires exotic animals in particular and has a history with the town health department. Although, in "Hail To The Chump", Pops reveals that he usually pays a fifty dollar charge to get inspectors to leave the diner.

Despite running a cheap diner, Pops is shown to be wealthy enough to live in a mansion, although it only appears in "Charm School Johnny".

Biography[]

Pops' life seems to be very strange yet shrouded in mystery. For example, it was revealed that he once saved the life of a European duchess.[1] Pops claims he ran away from home at 3 years old, also implying he named himself "Pops" as he has been telling others to call him that since then.[2] He has no known last name. It is likely that Pops is in his fifties or sixties, given his appearance and him once mentioning seeing a badminton game in 1948, without specifying how old he was at the time.[3]

In the 25th century, Pops still runs the diner and lives life as a floating head in a jar.[4] This is due to Pops having froze his own head after a horrific accident with a meat slicer in the year 2007.

In "Lodge Brother Johnny", it was also revealed that he is a member of a secret fraternity.

Relationships[]

Johnny Bravo[]

While Pops has used Johnny for his "get rich quick" schemes a number of times, he acts as a father figure for him. Johnny often goes to Pops for his food or advice, such as asking him what a gentleman is, or about moving out. He was once thanked by Johnny for always being there for him, making it evident that he does see him like a father.[5] Much like Johnny's relationship with his mother, he is usually more friendly and open with Pops than anyone else in his life. Pops has shown that he genuinely cares about Johnny despite the misfortune he often gets him into, as he has saved him from trouble before. Pops often refers to him (and rarely, Carl) as 'son' during conversation, which supports both his casual, fatherly attitude, and his closeness to the two.

Carl Chryniszzswics[]

Pops and Carl are good friends and well-aware they are smarter than Johnny, sharing that in common. Unsurprisingly, Pops trusts Carl more than he trusts Johnny. Despite this, he is just as capable of using Carl for his own gain on occasion.

The two have a playfully antagonistic relationship in "Charm School Johnny", where Carl scoffs at the idea of Pops turning Johnny into a gentleman within a few days and makes a bet with him.

Carl sometimes goes to Pops to vent his frustrations to him, such as sadly visiting the diner with his dying plant in "Carl Be Not Proud" and telling him about his recent failure to make the world's first smart drink.[6] Despite finding Carl's grief about his venus flytrap to be overdramatic, Pops agreed to put it in the diner's kitchen and ended up bringing it back to health. Pops also warmed up to the plant itself, petting it and commenting that he likes it "better than people" after seeing Johnny chase Carl.

Bunny Bravo[]

Pops & Bunny (TMWTGG)

While they aren't seen together much, Johnny's mother and Pops are shown to be good friends when they're interacting with each other. Bunny also doesn't mind when Pops uses Johnny in his moneymaking schemes, for at least two reasons:

  1. As shown in "The Man with the Golden Gut," Bunny feels that Pops' schemes help give her son some focus in his life.
  2. On a more selfish note, Pops usually gives Bunny a share of profits from his schemes involving Johnny.

Trivia[]

  • In "Bikini Space Planet!", Pops claims he was once a nuclear physicist, going so far as to build a machine with the help of Carl to try rescuing Johnny from space. This is never brought up again, although mentioned in a character bio on the Cartoon Network LA website.[7]
  • Despite all of his illegal activities, Pops claims to be a tax payer.
  • In "Hail To The Chump", Pops accidentally gives the entire town government food poisoning with his Ahi Tuna tots due to them being contaminated by red tide.
  • Pops is seen at age three with a single blonde hair. In the comic "Domina Delivers", he tells a story about himself from when he was Johnny's age, where he's shown with a full head of hair in a shorter version of Carl's usual hairstyle.
  • Assuming that "Pops" is just a nickname, his real name is never revealed at any point in the series.
