"Mama's New Boyfriend" is a Season 2 episode of Johnny Bravo.

Synopsis[]

Bunny gets herself a new boyfriend named Raoul Montoya, but Johnny thinks that he's only dating her for her money.

Plot Summary[]

Raoul and Bunny

Raoul and Bunny.

One afternoon, Johnny is returning home, very excited to have one of his favorite meals, Wienerloaf. However, when he arrives, he is met with Bunny and her new boyfriend, a wealthy tire magnate from South America named Raoul Montoya. Johnny does not take this news well, jealous of the attention Raoul is receiving and dismayed at potentially having a new father. He feels his fears are confirmed when he sees Bunny taking out money from their family savings (originally saving for a sweat lodge) to go on her date, assuming Raoul is only trying to get her cash.

When the two leave, Johnny feels alone and plans on stopping their date to save Mama. He then follows Raoul and Bunny to the Dropping's restaurant, where he disguises himself as a waiter and gives them pizza in an attempt to expose Raoul. He tries to accuse him of putting a condiment on the pizza that Bunny is allergic to, but this is proven to be false. Raoul is unscathed by this, excusing Johnny's behavior as being youthfully rambunctious and saying that Johnny will come to respect him in time. Johnny then grabs Raoul and throws him into a nearby ball pit, making it evident that he will not.

Later that night, Raoul and Bunny sit in his car on a cliff overlooking the town. The two are about to kiss when Johnny makes a grab for Raoul and throws him off the cliff's edge. Bunny then reveals that Raoul just forgot his wallet and already paid her back for the savings money she used. However, when a now-injured Raoul makes his way back up, he confronts and insults Johnny, poking him in the chest, which prompts Bunny to protect her son. This results in her angrily throwing Raoul off the cliff again seconds later. Raoul seems to shrug this off, saying he is going to call her sometime.

Back at home, Bunny happily serves the Wienerloaf for dinner and "promises" to Johnny that she will never let anyone come between them again, crossing her fingers behind her back.

Goofs[]

  • Raoul comments that Bunny has the body of a 1957 Dodge Dart. This is actually an error, as Chrysler did not release said vehicle model until 1960. However, there was a concept show car with the Dart name in 1956.

Trivia[]

  • A comic story with a very similar plot was published in an issue of Cartoon Cartoons, entitled "Mama's Boy". The main difference between the two is that Carl and Pops have roles in the comic and Wally, Bunny's love interest, is revealed to be a genuine jerk.
  • This episode was originally planned to begin with Johnny singing a song about Wienerloaf, along with a cameo appearance of characters from previous episodes. The storyboards for this scene were completed, but the idea was ultimately rejected by Cartoon Network, who were afraid the crew was trying to make the show more like Animaniacs, which Tingblad had previously worked on.[1]
  • Stephen Nicodemus, one of the show's background painters, made a real Wienerloaf to share with the rest of the crew.[2]
  • The closed captions for this episode incorrectly refer to Bunny as 'Bonnie'.

Cultural References[]

  • Raoul's last name, Montoya, a real Basque surname, could also work as a play on words of the car company Toyota. He also compares Bunny's body to a 1957 Dodge Dart vehicle.
    • Raoul also shares the last name of Inigo Montoya from The Princess Bride.
  • The Dropping's restaurant is a parody of Chuck E. Cheese.

Episode Connections[]

  • Raoul is referenced in "Rashomoron", when Bunny wakes up after listening to Johnny's story and suggests she was having a romantic dream about Raoul despite the two being no longer together.
