History[]

During production, the crew was given the news that Johnny Bravo was not going to be renewed for another season. This lead to members pitching their own ideas for a cartoon, including the late storyboard artist Dave Schwartz, who suggested a spin-off starring Little Suzy. While the idea was liked, it was soon decided that she would be given her own episode instead, "The Great Bunny Book Ban".[1] As the writers were aware the series (in its current form) was coming to an end, the episode "Get Stinky!" functioned as a finale.

Although these episodes were produced in 1999-2000 and were to air until mid-2001, Cartoon Network moved the last two premieres to June 2002, causing a year-long hiatus. It was generally assumed Johnny Bravo had ended and that the two holiday specials were going to be the last additions to the series until 2003, when news broke that a fourth season had been green-lit with creator Van Partible back at the helm entirely.

While the third season was airing, there was a bit of backlash online by fans and critics, namely on cartoon message boards, such as the ToonZone (now Anime Superhero) forums during the early 2000s. The most common criticism regarded Johnny's stupidity being over-exaggerated for laughs and the zanier plots. However, some saw these as improvements to the show.

Trivia[]

  • There are a few brief "crossover" gags involving Cartoon Network's other original programming, such as an appearance from I.M. Weasel during "In Your Dreams" and a reference to Ed, Edd n Eddy in "Biosphere Johnny."
    • As a "fourth wall breaking" gag, Johnny even mentions watching the network in "Lumberjack Johnny."
