"Johnny's Guardian Angel" is a Season 2 episode of Johnny Bravo.

Synopsis[]

After causing numerous disasters for Carl, Bunny, and Suzy, Johnny wishes that he was never born. Maurice, Johnny's guardian angel, shows him what life would be like if he wasn't.

Plot Summary[]

One morning, Johnny wakes up to a cement truck outside the house. He runs to the sidewalk, using the opportunity to make a face imprint. The cement unexpectedly hardens around his head, leaving him stumbling for help. Carl greets Johnny, showing him his brand new nougat-based computer. Johnny moves his arm, knocking it to the ground. Carl snaps, yelling at him and crying over his now broken invention. Johnny stumbles further and trips into Bunny's flower bed, ruining it. Bunny becomes very upset by this, going into the house without him. Free from the cement, Johnny is greeted by Suzy, who asks him to hold her red balloon while she ties her shoe. Johnny agrees, but uses the wrong hand when she needs extra assistance and lets go of the object. It flies away and Suzy cries, running off.

Johnny is now alone and feels guilty that he upset the three, wishing he had never been born. An angel then descends from the heavens and introduces himself as Maurice, Johnny's guardian angel, who is looking to earn his halo. Maurice offers to show Johnny a reality where he was never born, which he accepts.

On their first stop, the angel brings Johnny to a mansion. This is the home of Carl, a stuck-up multi-billionaire surrounded by women as a result of the Nougat 2000's success. Carl assumes Johnny to be from the pool-cleaning service and instructs him to clean up his jacuzzi and not to skip on the chloride. Johnny assumes Carl knows who he is and gets beaten by him, revealing himself to be also a master of Chinese Kenpo. Carl then calls his female security guards to kick Johnny out. Johnny comes to the conclusion that Carl's life is better without him being born.

Maurice then takes him to Pop's Moon Palace, now Pop's Galaxy Palace, a fancy, refined restaurant that no longer serves "roadkill" and catering for high-end customers like rich businesspersons; royalties and statesmen. Pops, however, seems relatively the same. Johnny asks him if he recognizes him, as he and "that doofus Carl" used to visit the diner all the time. This angers Pops, who defends Carl and kicks Johnny out, as the diner would still be a dump if it weren't for the geek's computer plant putting their town "on the map". Johnny reaches the same conclusion as before, but stays convinced Bunny will recognize him.

Johnny then runs to the Bravo house, despite Maurice urging him not to. He falls into a secret chute that takes him inside, revealing Bunny in a hi-tech spy home. When asked, Bunny (codenamed "Madame X") says because she has no son, she can devote her passion in international espionage. Suddenly, she is interrupted by a call from Suzy (codenamed "Small Fry"), who turned out have become a supervillain about to destroy Cleveland if her demands are not met.

Johnny gets kicked out and Maurice feels hopeless, no longer able to lie to him. Shortly, Johnny spots the sidewalk, now without his face imprint. This outrages him, making him decide he does not want to deprive the world of his good looks. Maurice grants this wish, and Johnny is back in his reality seconds before the cement accident. Overjoyed, Johnny grabs Carl in an arm hug and picks up Suzy, surprising them both and ruining their items. Upon seeing his mother, Johnny clumsily trips into the wet cement. Carl recalls a saying about this, confirming Maurice has finally earned his halo:

"You know what they say, Johnny! Everytime an overstuffed macho monkey falls face-forward into cement, an angel gets his halo!"

Trivia[]

  • This episode is a parody of the film It's a Wonderful Life. However, rather than wings like what the Guardian Angel Clarence sought, Maurice instead sought to get his halo.
  • This was not the first television episode to reverse It's a Wonderful Life's plot by suggesting the world would instead be a better place if the person who wished to have never been born had never been born. A similar plot, though far more down to earth, had in fact previously been used in the 1989 Married with Children two-part Christmas episode It's a Bundyful Life, where, despite seeing the world as a better place without his existence, Al Bundy decided that he wanted to live after seeing how happy his family would, which he didn't want after what they put him through. Bundy's Guardian Angel would even be less fortunate than Maurice, who-per Carl's advice-appeared to have received to have received the same benefit as Clarence in It's a Wonderful Life, as he would was forced to enter heaven without his luggage, presumably for not getting Bundy to treat his family better.
  • Maurice says that "[his] boss was right, [Johnny's] nothing but a big piece of meat with a mouth hole," implying that not even God Himself has any real hope for Johnny. However, Al Bundy's Guardian Angel was actually similar, saying that he didn't think Bundy was even "a human soul," though he also described God as being too distracted by playing Nintendo to cast judgement on Al, or even find a replacement Guardian Angel.
  • Carl and his Johnny-less counterpart both use the phrase "overstuffed macho monkey" to describe Johnny.
    • Rich Carl uses it to insult Johnny for assuming he'd want to be friends with someone like him.
    • Regular Carl uses it to insult Johnny in a more casual and goofy manner.
  • In the closed captions for this episode (which predates the third season), Carl's last name is incorrectly spelled (phonetically) as "Krynziziziwich."
