"Cover Boy" is a Season 2 episode of Johnny Bravo.

Synopsis[]

With a little help from Carl and Pops, Johnny gets a job as a fashion model (so he can meet female models).

Plot[]

While watching a fashion show on TV at the Bravo residence, Johnny talks about how attractive he finds fashion models. His nerdy friend, Carl, suggests that Johnny pursue a modeling career, since there are male models in addition to female models (and it would be the best way for Johnny to meet female fashion models).

Johnny and Carl head over to the Moon Palace to get started on Johnny's newfound modeling aspirations, and Pops ends up helping them as well, with the restaurateur offering to serve as Johnny's photographer (so Johnny can make up a portfolio). The trio eventually heads out to somewhere in the woods to take a series of photos for Johnny's portfolio, which he ultimately presents to an agency called "'Tude Models."

The agency immediately hires Johnny (partly to replace a male model that was recently fired) and he heads to the diner to tell Carl and Pops the good news. But upon entering the diner, Johnny discovers that Carl's covered in poison ivy, which Carl figures that he must've contracted during the outdoor photoshoot that he and Johnny had done with Pops and hopes that Johnny doesn't also have it. The meathead-turned-model is confident that he doesn't have it and leaves to go get ready for the fashion show -- right after he leaves, it soon becomes apparent that Pops also has poison ivy.

Later on, at the show, Johnny tries asking out some of the female models, but they all claim to only date actors. The show soon starts for real, and when Johnny finally goes out on the runway, it turns out that he contracted poison ivy just like Carl and Pops did -- and unfortunately, he starts breaking out right in the middle of the runway, ultimately ruining the show. Johnny gets fired from the modeling agency, but a man in the audience at the fashion show who claims to be a director for TV-commercials offers Johnny a role in a commercial that he's shooting the day after the show. The female models witness this and start expressing an interest in Johnny.

At a later point, Johnny (surrounded by the female models from the fashion show) are at the diner with Carl and Pops to see the new commercial that Johnny was in -- but when the commercial turns out to be for a lotion that's supposed to sooth things like rashes (caused by stuff like poison ivy), the models are disgusted by this and immediately lose interest in Johnny, even running out of the diner.

Goofs[]

  • Throughout most of the episode, there seems to be an issue with color balance, such as Carl's shirt and Pops' outfit appearing much brighter and whiter than usual.

Trivia[]

  • A screenshot of Johnny's reaction to Carl's poison ivy treatment ("I'm sickened, but curious.") became a notably popular online reaction image in the 2010s.
  • Starting with this episode, the pitch of Carl's voice is noticeably higher and remains that way for the remainder of the series.

Cultural References[]

  • During the outdoor photoshoot, Johnny can be seen dressed as the Jolly Green Giant mascot.
