"Charm School Johnny" is a Season 2 episode of Johnny Bravo.
Synopsis[]
Pops makes a bet with Carl that he can turn Johnny into a gentleman, worthy of high society, within 7 days.
Plot Summary[]
A fancy woman is served food at Pops' Moon Palace, only to be targeted by Johnny. After Johnny shows his disregard for table manners and personal space, the woman angrily states that he is no gentleman. Confused, Johnny asks Pops what a gentleman is. Pops answers and says anyone can become a gentleman, even him. Carl laughs this off, which prompts Pops to make a bet that he can turn Johnny from "simian to sophisticate" by next Tuesday. Carl adds on, saying the loser will have to perform the Mexican hat dance for twenty-four hours straight. After seeing Johnny playing with spoons, Pops moves the deadline to Wednesday.
On Johnny's first day of training, Pops brings Johnny to his mansion and briefs him on what they will do. Johnny is too busy playing with Pops' giant globe to pay attention. Pops then gets Johnny to focus by using a beautiful, well-dressed woman. He tries his usual pick-up lines and flexing, but the woman just slams the globe onto him. Pops brings in someone else for Johnny to practice etiquette with: Carl in drag. Johnny is repulsed, but follows Pops' instructions to politely greet and compliment the "lady." He then pretends there is a puddle in the way, and carries Carl over toward a piranha tank. Carl demands to be carried back in the opposite direction, and Johnny tosses Carl into the tank. Pops is relieved they were already fed.
On Day 4 of charm school, Pops shows Johnny how to be polite when eating a meal. Johnny politely asks for some Sprayo-Mayo, and starts chugging it. Pops then tells Johnny to engage in small talk by asking him what he did that day. Johnny talks with his mouth full, then wipes his mouth on the table cloth. Carl chides him for doing so, then Johnny wipes his mouth on Carl's dress. Carl responds by smearing him with food. They have a brief food fight, and Johnny goes to throw Carl to the piranhas again. Pops tells Johnny to at least extend his pinkies before doing so.
On Day 6, Johnny is refusing to say a "stupid" phrase. Pops insists that he do it for the sake of improving his diction. Reluctantly, Johnny says, "The ants in France are prancing up my pants." Carl and Pops are delighted to hear this and nearly burst into song, but Johnny stops them. Pops decides that Johnny's ultimate test will the Gold Cotillion, a fancy party held on the Wednesday deadline.
That Wednesday night, Pops and Johnny are at the cotillion, dressed in tuxedos. Pops sees an old acquaintance, the Duchess of Wiggystick. He declares that if she finds Johnny to be a gentleman, that it is proof positive that the training worked. He approaches the Duchess, who looks a lot like Carl, and makes small talk before introducing Johnny. Johnny tells "Carl" to stop goofing around since the Duchess will be there soon. The Duchess is confused and offended, and Pops tries to stop Johnny. Johnny gets fed up with "Carl" and goes to throw the Duchess into the punch bowl. Pops tries once again to stop Johnny, but Johnny misunderstands the warning as a reminder to extend his pinkies. He throws the Duchess into the bowl. At that moment, Carl arrives, apologizing for being late. Johnny realizes his mistake, and Carl simply produces a sombrero and sets it on the floor. Pops starts doing his full day of dancing around the hat.
Goofs[]
- When Johnny meets the Duchess of Wiggystick, he is slightly taller than Pops.
Trivia[]
- Johnny eats soup with his fingers.
- Storyboards reveal a few key differences between it and the final episode:
- Johnny does a "booty shake" at the woman in Pops' house he was supposed to act gentlemanly towards.
- Carl's tiara appears differently and also seems to have gemstones on it during certain shots.
- Carl is seen scratching himself after greeting Johnny.
- The spray-o-mayo is referred to as "squeeze cheese". It is possible this dialogue was changed due to a copyright or trademark concern from Cartoon Network, as it still has the appearance of squeeze cheese in the final.
- After Carl scolds Johnny for misusing the tablecloth, Johnny shoots him a glare seconds before ripping his dress.
- The duchess appears to wear a necklace similar to Carl's. Her earrings are also diamond-shaped.
- The episode's plot is similar to the film "My Fair Lady," right down to bursting into song when Johnny passes his "diction" lesson.
Episode Connections[]
- The Duchess makes a second appearance in the episode "Johnny B. Badd".
