"Chain Gang Johnny" is a Season 3 episode of Johnny Bravo.

Synopsis[]

After getting thrown out of a movie theater, Johnny and Carl are randomly arrested and try to escape from prison.

Plot Summary[]

After Carl takes Johnny to the local movie theater, the two are kicked out due to Johnny being a nuisance during the film. This escalates into an argument between the two until pair of police officers nearby note that they just happen to be "looking for two guys" before deciding to arrest them. Carl clumsily tries to prevent their arrest, only for Johnny to accuse Carl of crimes he did not commit.

As the result of a "26-month media circus" surrounding their trial, Johnny and Carl are sent to Stinking Bog Correctional Facility. After Johnny angers the female warden, he is given seventeen days in "the box", an empty outhouse. Carl pleads with the warden to waive the punishment and she decides to throw them in together, much to Johnny's dismay.

When the punishment is over, the warden opens "the box" and several prisoners in party hats exit the outhouse. Johnny and Carl then reveal that they renovated the space like a house. Confused and angry, the warden chains them together by their ankles and orders them to break big rocks into pebbles, paste them back together, and break them again. Carl comes up with a plan to escape, which Johnny agrees to before he can reveal it.

Johnny & Carl On Cliff

Later that night, disguised as a married couple, Johnny and Carl treat the warden like a babysitter and convince her to let them leave the facility. Realizing she was tricked, she calls for the guards and their dogs to chase them. Throwing off their disguises, the two run into the swamp to try and escape. Johnny and Carl eventually pop out of a pond, only to be covered in leeches. Johnny screams and begins running until they reach a steep cliff by the sea. Johnny then proposes a bizarre plan involving a bag of coconuts and throws Carl off the edge with it, causing them both to plummet into the water. They struggle in the waves before washing up on a shore shortly after and celebrating their freedom. On the road nearby, the same police officers spot the pair and decide to arrest them.

Once again at the correctional facility, Johnny irritates the warden to the point she attacks him, ending the episode.

Trivia[]

  • The episode is a blatant parody of the 1967 film Cool Hand Luke.
    • There are direct references to the film, such as the warden's repeating of "What we have here is a failure to communicate," and the concept of "the box."
  • The title of the Danish documentary Johnny and Carl watched, "Høeven Na Sköl", seems to be partially untranslatable nonsense.
    • "Høeven" is not a Danish word. "Na" is a misspelling of "Nå", which can be used in many different contexts. "Sköl" is a misspelling of "Skoll", or "Skál" in Danish, the word for a toast or "cheers".
  • Although Johnny's coconut plan seemed far-fetched, giving Carl the bag and shoving him off the cliff (before realizing that they are still chained together) implies he was trying to drown him.
  • The police officers are named Morty and Mike.
  • While Johnny and Carl were both arguing outside of the theater, The movie poster had a building. Which is on fire, And the letters on it said "Coming Soon", This episode aired 5 months before the September 11 attacks.
  • This is the second time Johnny has a hand in getting Carl thrown into prison. The first instance was "Hail To The Chump".
  • This episode premiered alongside "Lodge Brother Johnny" and "Lumberjack Johnny" on the Cartoon Cartoon Fridays block. However, there seems to be confusion about the network's scheduling and claims that "Chain Gang Johnny", "Bootman", and a few others were aired out of production order during the season.
    • The Cartoon Orbit code 'Chains' was given out the night of its premiere, unlocking a special animated cToon of Carl and Johnny based on the episode.
