"Carl Be Not Proud" is a Season 2 episode of Johnny Bravo.
Synopsis[]
Misunderstanding that Carl is about to die, Johnny vows to do anything to make him happy on his "final day". Carl takes advantage of this.
Plot Summary[]
Carl is at Pop's Moon Palace, crying to Pops about his dying Venus flytrap. He asks Pops to bring it to the kitchen, where it will be surrounded by flies for the few hours it has left to live. Pops does so, and Carl continues to cry. Johnny enters and sarcastically asks the depressed Carl, "Who died?" Carl shows Johnny a medical report. Johnny reads it and grows worried that Carl is the one dying. Carl starts correcting Johnny, but gets an idea after Johnny says he will do anything to make Carl happy on his last day alive.
Later, Johnny and Carl are role-playing "Trip McCoy, Galaxy Boy", while wearing the appropriate costumes. Carl tries introducing Johnny as his sidekick, Biff Proton, but Johnny is embarrassed to wear the costume or say any lines. He does so reluctantly, asking what "Trip's" orders are. Carl demands a foot rub, and Johnny refuses. Carl zaps Johnny's helmet in response. The two of them briefly duel with a lamp and mop. Johnny gets the upper hand, but stops himself, not wanting to assault his dying friend anymore. Carl pretends to see a bright light at the end of a tunnel, and Johnny apologizes, wanting to make up for his actions. Carl quickly asks what size unitard Johnny wears.
Later, at an ice skating rink, Carl and Johnny skate together. Carl asks to be spun and lifted, but Johnny gets distracted by a cute skater. He throws Carl across the ice and flirts with the girl. She pours hot cocoa on his costume and pushes him across the rink. He lands next to Carl and declares that he is leaving. But, Carl plays up the "dying" angle again, and Johnny changes his mind.
Downtown, Johnny wears a sandwich board that says, "Carl is my best friend!" He shouts various compliments about Carl through a megaphone, while Carl watches from a nearby lawn chair. He stops a few times to ask people in the street to run him over or bury him under the asphalt. He asks Carl to stop, but again, Carl claims to see the light in the tunnel. Johnny tries complimenting him more, but starts having a breakdown. At that moment, Pops arrives, holding the now-healthy Venus flytrap. He explains that the plant got better after eating some of Pops' "Loose Meat Special," adding that the medical report was incorrect. Johnny overhears, and is angry at being manipulated. Carl quickly runs away, and Johnny chases him down the street. Pops pats the fly trap on the head, and says he likes the plant more than people. The fly trap just burps in response.
Goofs[]
- The shot of Carl laying on his bed seems to have a perspective issue, as the bed appears too tiny or short in comparison to his body.
Trivia[]
- Johnny implies he has mistreated Carl for "the past two decades", and that Carl has always fantasized him as his best friend, although this is never expanded upon.
- This is contradicted a season later by "Freudian Dip", where it's stated that Carl actually used to bully Johnny when they were younger (when Johnny was smaller and scrawnier than Carl).
- This is the only time a bed is seen in Carl's room, although it does not match the large one he brought with him in "Doomates".
- In the closed captions for this episode, as it pre-dates the third season, Carl's last name is incorrectly spelled (phonetically) as "Crisovinowitz".
- This is the only episode to feature Carl's name in the title.
