"'Candidate Johnny" is a Season 3 episode of Johnny Bravo.
Synopsis[]
Johnny and Carl both try to run for Litter Commissioner, with disastrous results.
Plot Summary[]
The episode begins with Johnny going outside and leaving a trail of breadcrumbs so he can never get lost again. A few steps away from home, birds begin pecking at the crumbs, causing Johnny to believe he is now lost.
Johnny rushes into town dramatically, until he sees Carl and puts on his usual laid-back facade. Carl, putting up campaign posters, gives the news that he is running for town litter commissioner. Johnny is uninterested as usual and makes fun of him for wanting such a position. Carl is then greeted by Melinda, the president of the neighborhood recycling team. The two seem to be interested in each other, Carl especially. Johnny, now realizing he could win Melinda's love (or other girls') instead of Carl, immediately decides to run against him.
The two drive vehicles around town to advertise their campaigns, Carl driving his own eco-friendly, geeky-looking rocket car invention, and Johnny driving around a fancier, exhaust-spewing car that shoots paper out of the trunk. After Johnny crashes into Carl's vehicle and consumes the water and walnut that were powering it, he causes a radioactive explosion.
At Pop's Moon Palace, Pops tells Johnny that he has received zero votes so far, despite Carl being ahead by 99%. It is then revealed that a clueless local man responded to the election with "I like pie!", which was counted as one vote for a third candidate— a pie. Johnny is a bit worried about this, claiming the pie has "an impressive grasp of the issues." Carl enters the diner with paparazzi, challenging Johnny to a live television debate. Johnny then asks Pops what a debate is and accepts, despite Pops pointing out how unfit he would be for one.
At the debate, Johnny is already doing poorly by encouraging ozone depletion. Carl is asked about his policies on trash separation, which leads to Johnny shouting out bizarre claims about him, such as accusing him of being a convicted diamond smuggler. Said mudslinging eventually works in Johnny's favor after he says Carl took a rubber ducky to their high school prom, which Carl has no comment on. This causes shock and outrage throughout the building, with townsfolk rushing to vote and the situation being referred to in the paper as Ducky Gate. Now, Johnny and Carl are tied 50/50 in the polls, while the pie has seceded, claiming to be "sickened and disgusted."
When the final votes are counted, Johnny is revealed to be the winner. This inflates Johnny's ego even more, causing him to call for a parade in his honor. During the parade, he is driven around by Pops and mass litter is spread across town. Enraged, Melinda and the rest of the recycling team stop Johnny's car and beat him up, especially after he makes a sexist comment. Later, Johnny is shown picking up the litter himself as punishment.
Trivia[]
- This is the first time Carl's last name is spelled on-screen, as 'Chryniszzswics'. However, on a size chart for Season 2, it is spelled "Chrynszzswicz", closer to how it is usually pronounced.
- The Cartoon Cartoon Fridays promo and iTunes description for this episode both state that the position Johnny and Carl were running for was 'Assistant Litter Commissioner'.
Cultural References[]
- During their debate, Johnny claims Carl has six wives. This is likely a reference to the six wives of King Henry VIII.
