"Ape Is Enough" is a Season 2 episode of Johnny Bravo.

Synopsis[]

Johnny, Pops, and Carl visit a dangerous island in the South Seas, where a giant female gorilla falls in love with Johnny.

Plot[]

Johnny heads to Pops' diner to eat and hang out, but Pops is getting ready for his annual recipe hunt to the South Seas, with Carl Chryniszzswics and Bobo in tow. Pops invites the meathead to come with them, especially since Pops could use more help with the heavy lifting. Johnny initially turns him down but agrees to go along when Pops brings up the prospect of Johnny meeting beautiful native women.

Due to a mistake on Johnny's part, the gang ends up on Skull Island instead of Bikini Island and are soon approached by a group of hostile natives, who kidnap Johnny. Pops and Carl go to save Johnny, who's eventually taken by a giant female gorilla. When Carl tries saving Johnny from the huge ape, she swallows Carl whole and takes Johnny back to her cave. It becomes apparent that the ape is in love with Johnny, who clearly doesn't reciprocate and tries turning her down as politely as he can.

Pops eventually reaches the cave to try rescuing Johnny but is almost eaten by the ape just like Carl was. However, the ape is soon distracted by a giant two-headed rabbit monster and goes to protect Johnny (and Pops) from the monster. Realizing that the ape's in love with Johnny, Pops comes up with the idea of taking her back to his diner (using Johnny as bait) and make a fortune off of her. Promising to give him a (very small) share of the profits, Johnny agrees to it. Pops, with Johnny and the ape and even Carl (who somehow managed to escape from inside the ape) head back home and set up the ape for display at Pops' diner.

During the premiere of the ape at the diner, Carl's worried about agitating the ape too much, but Pops brushes off his concerns. After Johnny (who's referred to as the ape's boyfriend) is photographed with her, he's soon photographed with some "sexy supermodels." This makes the ape very angry and jealous, to the point of where she breaks free of her chains, grabs Johnny and climbs to the top of the sign at Pops' diner. Johnny's mother, Bunny, sees the whole thing on TV and (eventually) goes to rescue her son.

Bunny (now in a fighter plane) arrives at the diner to save her son -- she's ultimately able to bore the ape (and Johnny) to sleep by showing off a slideshow of a vacation she had recently taken to Tampa, Florida. The ape sets Johnny down on the ground and she herself eventually falls asleep on top of the diner's sign, before eventually falling to the ground (still asleep) and crushing Johnny.

As Pops, Carl and Bunny bow their heads, with Pops saying "Twas beauty vanquished the beast," the episode ends with a hurt Johnny saying, "You got that right. Could I get a paramedic?"

Trivia[]

  • This episode's a blatant parody of the original King Kong film (which was released in 1933, 66-years before this episode came out).
  • During her slideshow of her vacation to Tampa, Florida, Bunny Bravo's revealed to have a sister named Shirley.
  • The plot is similar to the first Johnny Bravo comic story (released that same year) from Cartoon Network Starring, "Johnny Bigfoot", as both involve Johnny being chosen as a mate by an ape-like creature and Carl attempting to save him.
    • The story was written by John Crane, one of the writers on the show who did not work on this episode.
  • In this episode, Johnny claims to be a Libra (an air sign), which means that his birthday is anywhere on/from September 23rd to October 22nd.
    • This is contradicted later on by "It's Valentine's Day Johnny Bravo," where it's claimed that his birthday is actually on February 14th (which is Valentine's Day). Assuming that this is true, that would make Johnny an Aquarius (also an air sign).
