"A League Of His Own" is a Season 2 episode of Johnny Bravo.

Synopsis[]

Johnny poses as a little girl, who is "large for her age", in order to help out Mama and Suzy's softball team.

Plot Summary[]

Bunny and her softball team, Mama's Maulers, are playing against the Bad Girls team. Suzy asks for a new bat to improve her swing. Bunny calls for her bat boy, Johnny. Johnny complains about his job, saying that it is embarrassing to be running bats for little girls. Bunny wants him to be more supportive since the regular bat girl is ill because she was bitten by a deer tick, and they are playing a game that will put them in the season's preliminaries. Johnny reluctantly brings bats to Suzy and flings each rejected one aside.

At the Bad Girls' dugout, one of the girls is complaining of a broken arm. The coach tells her to rub some dirt in it and play on account she wants the team to win. Just then, one of the bats Johnny threw comes flying in and nearly hits the girls. The coach yells at Johnny to watch what he is doing, and when Johnny goes to tell her to shut up, he notices how pretty the coach is. He starts flirting with her, but she violently rejects him with his bag of bats. She calls him a lowly bat boy, and Johnny denies it, saying that Bunny trusted him with her secret baseball signs. The coach says she will go out with Johnny in exchange for the list of signs, and Johnny eagerly hands them over. He does a little victory dance, but Bunny pulls him away, calling the rival coach a "hussy".

The game begins, and Suzy is up to bat first. She makes it to second base, and Bunny gives her various signals on what to do next. The rival coach reads from Bunny's list and gives her own team signals on how to stop Suzy. Suzy dashes to third base, but is tagged out with a waiting ball by the other team. Several outs later, Bunny's team hasn't scored at all, and she suspects someone has stolen her secret baseball signs. Johnny feels guilty, and comes up with a plan to help the Maulers.

Johnny quickly puts on a softball uniform and wig, then approaches Bunny, offering to be a batter. Bunny, with nothing to lose at this point, puts the "big, strapping girl" up to bat. Johnny swings for the fences, and quickly gains points for the Maulers. Eventually, the score is tied, and Johnny does his victory dance at home plate. The rival coach recognizes the goofy dance and distracts Johnny with a nickel on a string. After leading him away from the batter's box, she says she knows what Johnny is up to, but won't tell anyone if he throws the game. Johnny refuses, but quickly changes his mind when she offers to date him again.

Johnny gets two strikes, but looks over at Bunny and her team. Not wanting to let them down, he hits a home run. The Maulers cheer at their assured victory, but the rival coach rips off Johnny's wig as he runs past. The Maulers are disqualified for having an adult man on their team. Suzy, suspecting the Bad Girls were playing a bit too well, quickly rips off two of the girls' disguises. The rival team is also made up of adult men, and they are disqualified, too. Johnny apologizes to Bunny for his actions, but Bunny forgives him. She offers to take both teams, except the "hussy" coach, out for chili dogs.

Trivia[]

  • One of the Bad Girls players has a broken arm and says that she shattered her tibia. The tibia is actually located in the lower leg.

Cultural References[]

  • The episode's title is a reference to the movie A League of Their Own, a film about the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League.
  • Johnny says, "Well, bang the drum slowly!" upon seeing the rival coach. This is a reference to the novel and film Bang the Drum Slowly, a baseball drama.

Episode Connections[]

  • Johnny tries to distract Suzy by "spotting" a celebrity he made up, named "Mookie Wilson." This is the same trick he played on Suzy in "Welcome Back, Bravo," when he "spotted" Leonardo DiCaprio. Suzy was also fooled by a "celebrity spotting" in "The Great Bunny Book Ban," although Johnny was not involved.
